How it works
Yes/No Questions: Pop the Verb to the Front
Statement: "You are happy." Question: "Are you happy?"
Dutch does exactly the same thing. To turn a statement into a Yes/No question, simpler pop the verb to Position 1.
Formula: [Verb] + [Subject] + [Rest] ... ?
Examples
-
Statement: Jij werkt hier. (You work here.)
-
Question: Werk jij hier? (Work you here?)
-
Statement: Hij spreekt Nederlands. (He speaks Dutch.)
-
Question: Spreekt hij Nederlands? (Speaks he Dutch?)
The "Jij" Spelling Trick ⚠️
There is one tiny spelling rule you must know.
When jij (you) comes after the verb, the verb loses its -t.
- Jij werkt. (Statement -> T is present)
- Werk jij? (Question -> T is gone!)
Think of jij as a hungry Pac-Man. When it follows the verb, it eats the t.
- Komt jij? ❌
- Kom jij? ✅
Pro Tip 💡
Intonation matters! Your voice should go up at the end of the sentence to show it's a question.
- Kom je morgen? ⤴️
